DeLoach captures third U.S. Indoor title [Track]
She was down physically, yet Alaska’s Janay DeLoach was still up for the challenge of defending her title at the U.S. Indoor Championships.
The 27-year-old captured her third consecutive long jump title Saturday night in Albuquerque, N.M., although it wasn’t easy for the reigning Olympic bronze medalist.
“I struggled a little bit with myself,” DeLoach told reporters. “I came down with a little sickness, maybe the stomach flu or food poisoning, earlier this week so I’ve been feeling a little down.”
Her winning mark was 22 feet, 3¼ inches, well off her best.
DeLoach, of Eielson High fame, took the lead for good on her second jump.
It was her eighth major victory in the long jump since 2011, including a Millrose Games win just last month.
She won the 2011 U.S. Indoor title at 22-11¼ and the 2012 meet at 22-7¼.
DeLoach is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.
