Rhea finishes rookie season in Poland [Basketball]

When Talisa Rhea of Juneau was in college, her team ran plays specifically designed for her. They made it easy.

In Poland as a pro, her team expected Rhea to get her own shot. That wasn’t so easy, but it made her a better player as a result.

“I found myself having to create a little more for myself than what I was used to,” she told me. “In college we ran screens to let me catch and shoot; that wasn’t the case as much here for the whole season. I found myself having to create and I think I got better at it.”

Rhea, of Juneau-Douglas High fame, finished as the No. 2 scorer for SSA Gdynia, which finished with a 6-16 record in the country’s top professional women’s league.

The 5-foot-11 rookie guard averaged 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 22 games. Her season high was 21 points.

“It was definitely a good experience,” she said. “I thought there were some adjustment periods. The 3-point line was further back. The system our team ran. We had a coaching change a few months into the season, so it was like re-learning it all over again.

“Overall I thought the season went fairly well. I know now what I can improve on next season.”
