Anchorage’s Corey Madden picked up his first save with the Amarillo Sox, a professional team in Texas.

The 28-year-old relief pitcher struck out the only batter he faced with the bases loaded to nail down a 10-7 victory over Grand Prairie.

“I’m not the closer,” he told me. “We don’t really have an established closer.”

Madden, of East High fame, would be a strong candidate.

The eighth-year pro has the stuff, the mentality and the resume to be a closer.

The righty has appeared in 212 career games, all but one in relief. Last year he was the setup guy for Double-A Jacksonville and also saw time at Triple-A New Orleans.

With Amarillo, Madden has pitched when his team was winning, losing, whenever.

He has pitched in six of his team’s 10 games, never going more than an inning.

Madden is 19-13 with 14 saves for his career.
