Alaska leads fight vs. obesity [Healthy Futures]

July 25, 2013

Healthy Futures, the signature program of the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame, participated earlier this month in a one-day special event hosted by Voices for Healthy Kids, a joint initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the American Heart Association (AHA) in Washington, D.C.

After decades of increases in rates of childhood obesity, Anchorage is one of several cities across the country that have reported that their rates have declined. Alaska’s Healthy Futures program will join organizations from many of these places to take part in a conversation about how their communities are taking on the epidemic.

Healthy Futures Director Cindy Norquest, who was a recent recipient of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Community Leadership Award spoke as one of four panelist and shared successful strategies implemented by Healthy Futures and other Alaskan programs.

More than 1,000 people joined Voices for Healthy Kids in person or via webcast at the event. Watch for yourself:
