Griffin Toomey of Anchorage had a near perfect punting performance to help the University of Saint John’s deliver an upset special over No. 2 ranked St. Thomas.

Making just his second college start, the sophomore booted a punt 64 yards in the fourth quarter and put another one inside the 20 as Johnnie Football won 20-18 in NCAA D3 play.

Toomey, of South High fame, finished the game with a 38.8 average with his final punt pinning St. Thomas on its own 12-yard line with 2:38 to play.

He is ranked among the top 40 punters in D3 with a 38.9 season average on eight kicks.

Toomey became the team’s starting punter last week. The first time he touched the ball he booted it 48 yards. His next two punts were downed inside the 20.
