Laws steps up game, guides team into elite 8 in Brazil

Andre Laws BasketballThe postseason has brought out the best in Andre Laws of Anchorage.

The 34-year-old professional basketball player stepped up his game in the first round of the league playoffs in Brazil, helping Sao Jose edge Palmeiras 3-2 in the best-of-5 series.

Laws, of East High fame, scored double figures in four of the five games, including 20 in Game 2, and shot 65 percent from the field.

The 6-foot-1 guard was red hot from 3-point range, sinking 9-of-15 attempts. He was also 11-for-12 on free throws.

He averaged 12 points in the playoff series, despite having only three points in Game 3.

Laws is averaging 11.1 points and shooting 56 percent in 36 games this season.

He and No. 6 Sao Jose have now moved into the quarterfinals, where they face No. 3 Brasilia starting Saturday.

The teams split their two-game series in the regular season, with Laws scoring 18 points in an 87-77 loss and collecting eight points and six assists in a 91-90 win.
