May 6, 2014

Alaskans Lucas Updike and Hans Roelle of the Eastern Oregon track and field team each hit NAIA ‘A’ national qualifying standard marks at the different meets in Oregon.

That means both guys are headed to the national championships.

Updike, of Ketchikan High fame, was the first to punch his ticket after his strong performance at the Twilight Meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The junior won the race in 9:17.57, which was 36 seconds faster than the next runner. It was also 10 seconds faster than his previous best time this season.

Roelle, of West High fame, competed at the OSU High Performance Meet and clocked a 1:51.30 in the 800 meters to finish ninth in a strong field. He was the second-fastest NAIA runner in the race and his time ranked No. 5 on the NAIA season-best list.
