Bennett all-conference in decathlon at WAC Championships

Tyler Bennett Track and FieldTyler Bennett of Anchorage might be the best Alaska athlete you’ve never heard of.

The first-year decathlete at the University of Idaho earned second-team all-conference honors with a sixth-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Utah.

Bennett finished the grueling 10-event competition with 5,894 points. Here is a breakdown of his performance in each event:

100 meters, 5th, 11.66 seconds
Long jump, 4th 21 feet, 4.25 inches
Shot put, 6th 34 feet
High jump, 5th 5 feet, 11.5 inches
400, 4th 52.69 seconds
110 hurdles, 6th 16.41 seconds
Discus, 7th 95 feet
Pole vault, 5th 12-9.5
Javelin, 3rd 153 feet, 3 inches
1,500, 3rd 5 minutes, 36.45 seconds

Bennett, of Dimond High fame, was a three-time all-conference high jumper in his first three seasons at Idaho before shifting his focus to multiple events this season.

He competed in the heptathlon for the first time during this past indoor season and finished seventh at the WAC Indoor Championships, earning two points. Idaho won the conference title by one point.
