Laws, Sao Jose stave off playoff elimination in Brazil

Andre Laws BasketballAnchorage’s Andre Laws is now just one win away from reaching the Brazilian basketball league finals.

Tonight the 34-year-old guard was one of four players to reach double figures as Sao Jose dos Campos beat Paulistano 96-68 to even their semifinal playoff series at 2-2.

Game 5 is Friday, with a trip to the finals on the line.

Laws, of East High fame, started in the backcourt and pumped in 17 points in 36 minutes. The 6-foot-1 Alaskan went 5-for-10 from the field and sank all six free throw attempts.

He has made 17-of-18 free throws in the series and averaged 12.5 points and 3.8 assists.

League champion Flamengo waits in the finals, beating Mogi as Cruz 3-1 in the other semifinal. Flamengo is the No. 1 seed.

Sao Jose is the No. 6 seed; Paulistano No. 2.
