Toomey punts well, but Saint John’s falls in D3 playoff

Griffin Toomey FootballThe playoffs brought out the best in Griffin Toomey of Anchorage.

The sophomore punter made the Saint John’s special teams special during the NCAA D3 football playoffs, raising his level of play when the No. 13 Johnnies needed him most.

Take a 35-7 victory over St. Scholastica in the first round when he averaged 36.5 yards on four punts and dropped three of them inside the 20-yard line, including two inside the 5.

Or Saturday’s 21-10 loss to No. 4 Wartburg in Iowa in the semifinals when he averaged 42.6 yards on five punts and placed two inside the 20.

In two playoff games, Griffin averaged 39.9 yards on nine punts. He averaged 37.9 on 50 punts this season.

Griffin, of South High fame, was named to the All-MIAC second team this season and led the conference in punts inside the 20 [23] and fair catches [13] for the second straight year.
