Mattson goes 7-for-7 from foul line for Portland

Hannah Mattson BasketballUniversity of Portland sophomore Hannah Mattson of Fairbanks put on a free-throw shooting clinic against Pepperdine.

She sank a career-high seven free throws on her way to scoring a season-high 9 points in a 76-72 loss during West Coast Conference women’s basketball action in California.

Mattson, of West Valley High fame, helped Portland nearly rally from a 13-point deficit with 3:23 to play.

The Alaskan was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws to pull her team within 73-70 with 31 seconds left.

Then the 5-foot-9 guard sank two more foul shots to make it 74-72 with 18 seconds left.

Mattson is averaging 17.6 minutes and has scored 72 points in 17 games. She had started eight straight games until recently.
