Sherman-Newsome ninth Alaska man to score 1K at D1 level

Twenty years ago the state of Alaska didn’t have a single NCAA D1 men’s basketball player with 1,000 points.

Today we have 9.

Anchorage’s Damon Sherman-Newsome joined the select club today with 11 points for Colgate University in a 61-55 win over Leigh that secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Patriot League tournament.

The 6-foot-5 senior guard now has 1,003 career points in three seasons at the D1 level.

The 1K milestone didn’t go unnoticed by Sherman-Newsome.

“It means everything. I try to carry Alaska everywhere I go. To be able to do that, to accomplish that, to show people that we can play basketball because still don’t think we can. It’s huge,” he told me. “I think it’ll help younger kids in Alaska. They will see that it can be done.”

Sherman-Newsome, of Bartlett High fame, admitted that he wants to be considered among the best players in Alaska history. He took a different path than most.

He wasn’t a player of the year. He wasn’t highly recruited. He went to a JC as a freshman.

But now he’s part of a hoops hierarchy.

“Honestly that was always my goal, to even be in that conversation to be considered one of the better players,” he said. “Now I can say it and I have proof to back it up.”
