Simmers gets hot, helps Malone stay within division lead

Gus Simmers BasketballGus Simmers of Anchorage enjoyed a hot shooting night en route to helping Malone University stay within striking distance of a divsion title.

The former two-time Alaska player of the year bagged 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in an 86-72 road win over Lake Erie in Ohio.

The win kept Malone two games out of first place with six to play in the south division of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athlete Conference.

Simmers, of ACS fame, reached double figures for only the third time in 22 games this season. He is averaging 3.1 points.

The 6-foot-4 guard also hit his first 3-pointer since before Christmas.

He could be a key difference maker down the stretch for Malone in a run toward the NCAA D2 playoffs.
