Alaska player of the year Hebard commits to Oregon
West Valley’s Ruthy Hebard has committed to the University of Oregon, where she will become the fifth Alaska girls player of the year to play in the Pac-12.
The others were Soldotna’s Molly Tutor at Arizona State, Juneau’s Talisa Rhea at Oregon State and Anchorage’s Azella Perryman at Stanford and Natalie Jones at Arizona State.
Hebard helps make up a fab five lineup from Alaska.
The 6-foot-3 forward and honor-roll student is nationally ranked No. 8 at her position by the ESPNW100 and No. 54 in the national Class of 2016.
The do-it-all playmaker averaged 26 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots as a junior in leading West Valley to the ASAA Class 4A state tournament championship game.
Her career high is 51 points against rival Lathrop.
Hebard is a two-time Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year and last year was voted the top player by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches. In 2014, she was invited to tryout for the U-17 U.S. National Team.
Oregon finished 13-17 last season under first-year head coach Kelly Graves, who previously led Gonzaga to the Elite 8 at the NCAA Tournament.
Hebard carries a 3.5 GPA.
She will make it official in November during the NCAA Early Signing Period.
