DeLoach in medal contention early, but falls to 8th at Worlds
August 28, 2015
A promising start had long jumper Janay DeLoach of Fairbanks in medal contention early at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.
She sat in third place after the first round, looking to bag another major medal to match her Olympic bronze and Worlds silver won in 2012.
But it never panned out.
DeLoach, of Eielson High fame, scratched on three of her final five attempts and faded to finish eighth out of 12 jumpers.
Her best effort of 21 feet, 8 inches was a foot off of her qualifying mark.
Fellow American Tianna Bartoletta won the gold with a jump of 23-4 on her final attempt.
