phillip_fenumiai_footballHe didn’t have his A-game, but Phillip Fenumiai of Juneau showed fortitude, fight and in the end found a way to lead Western Oregon to 31-25 win over Central Washington.

The sophomore quarterback overcame three interceptions by accounting for three touchdowns and 220 yards of total offense in just his second start under center.

“Yeah, gotta work on those turnovers; can’t be having that as quarterback,” Fenumiai told me. “I have to do my job to hold on to the ball for the offense.”

With his team trailing 15-14 in the second quarter, he rallied his team by throwing a pair of scores and leading another drive to a field goal as Western Oregon pulled away.

Fenumiai, of Juneau-Douglas High fame, improved to 2-0 as a starter.

“The defense did another fantastic job holding them off long enough so we could seal the deal,” he said.

He completed 13-of-19 passes for 176 yards. He rushed the ball 19 times for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Even though the team is unbeaten with him at quarterback, Fenumiai doesn’t assume anything about starting next week.

“I just have to keep working hard,” he said.
