Thompson named All-NWAC, helps Highline reach league final

Highline College goalkeeper Rachel Thompson of Kenai anchored a defense that carried the Thunderbirds all the way to the Northwest Athletic Conference title game.

The freshman finished tied for second in the league with 12 shutouts and flashed a 49-9 saves-to-goals ratio in her first season of college soccer.

Thompson, of Nikiski High fame, started 21 games for the 17-4-1 Thunderbirds.

Highline College clinched a share of the NWAC’s West Division and beat North champion Peninsula College 2-1 in the league tournament’s semifinals.

In the final, Spokane beat Highline 2-0.
