He usually plays his best in big games, so it was no surprise that Desmond Johnson of Anchorage elevated his game in the NJCAA D2 national championships in Danville, Illinois.

The South Mountain Community College freshman averaged 13.3 points, 6 rebounds and 3.3 assists in four games to lead his team into the consolation title game.

Johnson, of East High fame, earned the tournament’s Best Small Man Award.

The 5-foot-10 guard was at his best in a 92-86 win over Columbus State in an elimination game.

Not only did he play all 40 minutes, he finished two assists shy of a triple-double after collecting 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Earlier this season, Johnson bagged a quadruple-double against Prima with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals.
