Anchorage’s Whitney Williams extended her singles winning streak to 10 matches as she continues to play some of the best tennis of her life for Abilene Christian University in Texas.

The sophomore rallied for a 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Maider Martin of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at No. 5 singles.

Williams, of South High fame, has now won a string of matches over the last week in amazing comeback fashion.

“For sure after my singles win I was about to cry becuase I was so happy and tired and that was the hardest match I’ve played all season,” Williams told me.

Williams is now 9-0 in conference singles matches, 16-5 overall.

Last week she was down a set and a couple breaks before rallying in three sets.

Two days ago, in doubles, her and partner Erin Walker came back from a 5-2 deficit before posting the win.

And yesterday she was down 4-1 in the third set before triumphing in a tiebreaker.

“It was awesome,” Williams said. “It’s tiring [to have come back like that], but it’s pretty awesome to find another level of playing and competing.”

The dual meet between the two NCAA D1 teams was a showdown between the top two squads in the Southland Conference.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won 5-4 to claim the conference regular-season title and remain undefeated at 18-0.

Abilene Christian fell to 17-6, 7-2.
