Caciari retires as wrestling coach after 23 years in Colorado

Mike CaciariMike Caciari of Fairbanks is walking away from the sport he loves.

The 1982 West Valley graduate, now 52, has resigned as head high school wrestling coach at Valley High School in Gilcrest, Colorado.

Caciari will retire from coaching after 23 years.

“He’s that coach that would get out there and run with his kids and condition. He’s doing the drills and doing all that stuff. And it was hard on his body,” his wife Berta Chacon-Caciari told The Greeley Tribune. “He doesn’t coach from the sidelines. He’s on the mat.”

Caciari was named to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014 and also has been named Colorado Class 3A wrestling coach of the year in each of the past three seasons.

His teams have earned 11 conference titles and three state wrestling championships.

Caciari is retiring from coaching he will remain at the school to continue teaching science and math.
