Kuiper plays well in defeat, nets career-high 15 points for Lobos
Wasilla’s Dane Kuiper was ready to go from the jump against New Mexico’s arch rival, even if all of his teammates weren’t.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore pumped in a career-high 15 points and provided instant energy early before the team suffered an 84-71 loss to New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Kuiper, of Wasilla High fame, came off the bench to play 23 minutes and make 6-of-9 shots, including a trio of 3s. He added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
All of his shooting stats were career highs.
He supplied an instant spark in the first half when he scored seven points in eight minutes on 3-of-3 shooting, including the only 3-pointer for the Lobos after the opening 20 minutes of play.
Despite his stellar play, New Mexico trailed 43-26.
Kuiper kept it going in the second half, subbing into the game after just 30 seconds and helping cut a 17-point halftime deficit all the way down to 4 the first five minutes of the half.
His 3-pointer at the 15:08 mark made it 47-43.
In the later stages, he came up with a steal/layup combination and ended his big night with a 3-pointer on his final shot.
His previous career high of 11 came last year. Kuiper now has 32 points in eight games. Last year he scored 37 in 25 games.
