Trevor Dunbar of Kodiak ran to a sixth-place finish at the USA Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon, to earn a free trip to Africa.

He secured the sixth and final berth on the U.S. team that will compete at the world championships March 26 in Kampala, Uganda.

Dunbar, of Kodiak High fame, overcame the mud, the ice and Mason Ferlic by four seconds to clock a time of 30:33.

“UGANDA be kidding me..!!!” Dunbar tweeted. “Thanks to everyone, been a journey, and we still here fighting.!!”

The race featured five 2K loops and was held on a muddy, icy course surrounded by two feet of snow. Perfect conditions for a Kodiak kid.

With a lap to go, Dunbar was right on the heels of 3-time national champion Chris Derrick, who finished fifth in 30:27.
