The college football season has been finished for months, but the accolades keep rolling in for Saint John’s University senior punter Griffin Toomey of Anchorage.

He was one of 18 football players from his school recently named to the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society.

A total of 1,089 players from 297 schools (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA) qualified for membership in the society’s 11th year, both new single-year records in the history of the program.

To qualify, student-athletes must be either a starter or a significant substitute in one’s last year of eligibility, achieve a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and meet all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

Toomey, of South High fame, was a four-year starter and two-time all-conference pick at Saint John’s.

He recorded the third-best, single-season punting average in school history with a 41.3-yard mark (35 punts for 1,445 yards) in 2016.

Toomey ended his career second in school history with a 38.3-yard average on 163 punts, 59 of which were dropped inside the 20-yard line (36.2 percent).
