Three Alaskans help Aquinas claim NAIA hockey national title

Anchorage’s Steven Gustafson, Mike Curran and Dawson Ellingworth won an Alaska high school state championship with West High in 2015.

They got the band back together at NAIA Aquinas and returned to the top of the charts.

The trio of college freshmen helped the Saints claim the NAIA Hockey Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Indiana Tech in the championship game in Dublin, Ohio.

Gustafson assisted on the go-ahead goal in the second period that proved to be the game winner.

Top-seeded Aquinas finished the season with a 24-11-2 record, including a 7-0 win over Lawrence Tech 7-0 in the semifinals.

Curran assisted on each of the first two goals and Gustafson also collected an assist.

Gustafson, a former NAIA national defenseman of the week, led the team in scoring from the blue line.

He amassed 10-23—33 totals in 37 games, ranking first on the team in assists and points.

Curran joined the team late and posted 4-5—9 totals in 14 games. Ellingworth had 2-2—4 totals in 37 games.
