Time away from the sport he loves drove Nome’s Leif Erikson back to the wrestling mat.

And ultimately to Dickinson State University.

Two years after graduating high school, the two-time Alaska state champion will come back and compete for the NAIA school in North Dakota.

“Leif is a great person and a very dedicated athlete,” Dickinson State coach Justin Schlecht said in a release. “He has a great family support system that will help and allow him to accomplish great things while earning his degree and reaching his goals as a Blue Hawk wrestler.”

Erikson, of Nome-Beltz High fame, compiled a 133-21 career record and won two gold medals and a silver medal at the Class 1-2-3 state championships with the Nanooks.

He has been taking classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Erikson will compete in the middle weights at Dickinson State and major in physical education.
