Kenai’s Jonah Theisen kicked it into overdrive in the second half of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn a second-place finish among the dozen finalists at the NCAA D2 Track and Field Championships in Kingsville, Texas.

The Black Hills State University senior was in ninth place at the 1,800 mark.

Theisen, of Kenai Central High fame, won the national championship in the steeplechase as a freshman in 2016.

This was his final race and he left it all on the track as he posted a season-best time of 8:55.31.

Theisen owns the school record in the steeplechase at 8:50.63.

He also ranks fifth in the 1,500 in 3:52.22, just behind brother Jordan (3:50.79).
