Saari finishes second in rugged 70-K European mountain race
Matias Saari of Anchorage posted an impressive finish at the Traunsee Bergmarathon in Gmunden, Austria, where he covered the 70-K race in 8 hours, 37 minutes to finish second among 241 men’s finishers.
The grueling ultramarathon gained some 4,500 meters (14,700 feet) in elevation.
Saari was one of only four men to break the 9-hour barrier.
At 48, he was also the oldest runner in the top 5.
Saari is a perennial contender and owns titles in events such as Mount Marathon, Equinox Marathon and Angel Creek 50 Miler.
He is also a board member for Alaska Mountain Runners, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of mountain running in Alaska.
