Howard runs to PR, top-10 finish at Maverick Invitational
Riley Howard of Anchorage helped the Western Colorado University men’s cross country team run away with the team title at the Maverick Invitational in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The senior was among the five top scorers for the Mountaineers, who won the seven-team meet with 25 points. A perfect score is 20.
Howard, of Service High fame, finished 10th out of 87 finishers in the 8-kilometer men’s race.
He posted a PR of 25 minutes, 20 seconds, beating his previous best time by five seconds set last year.
Howard led a contingent of four Alaska runners at the meet.
In the women’s 5-K race, Kenai’s Brooke Satathite placed 27th out of 58 finishers for Western Colorado.
The sophomore made her season debut last week at the UCCS XC Open, where she finished 19th overall and second on her team.
On the men’s side, Nathan Sanches of Fairbanks finished 59th for Colorado Mesa and Sitka’s Asa Demert was 68th for Fort Lewis.
Sanches, of Lathrop High fame, was making his debut for Colorado Mesa as a UAF transfer. He was eighth on his team.
This was Demert’s first race of his college career.
