Merchant, Rolston share Alaska Athlete of the Week honors
Two high school athletes who turned in historic performances share Alaska Athlete of the Week honors.
Anchorage Christian School senior Tristian Merchant ran the fastest ever cross country time for an Alaska high school runner when he clocked 14:41 at the Region III championships in Palmer.
Chugiak High senior Josh Rolston kicked the longest field goal in Alaska high school football history, splitting the uprights on a 56-yard bomb in a loss to the East T-birds.
Both athletes established impressive new Alaska high school standards. Merchant is the first high school cross country to record a sub 15-minute time on Alaskan soil. Rolston’s field goal beat the previous state record of 53 yards set by Chugiak’s Bryan Maley a decade ago.
Merchant’s time ranks 3rd in the nation this year. He followed up his record-breaking run with a 14:51 effort at the state championship meet, earning him a 3rd straight Division II title. As a junior he finished 13th at the Nike Cross National Championships.
A 2019 All-State kicker, Rolston participated at the Kohl’s National Scholarship Camp this June and came away ranked in the top 50 among 800 players from across the country.
The athlete of the week recipient is selected by a panel each Friday and announced Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Sports Guys on CBS Sports Radio 590AM and 96.7FM.
