MLS signee Sulte named Alaska Athlete of the Week
Teenage soccer prodigy Hunter Sulte from Anchorage is our Alaska Athlete of the Week after agreeing to terms on a four-year deal with the Portland Timbers, making him only the 2nd Alaskan to sign a MLS contract.
Sulte, 18, has been a part of the Timbers Academy since 2016 when he left Alaska as a Mears Middle School seventh grader to pursue his dream of playing professional soccer.
The 6-foot-7 senior turned down a scholarship offer from defending NCAA College Cup champion Georgetown University, opting to begin his pro career with the Timbers. Portland plucked him from an ODP camp in Alaska four years ago and put him in the Timbers Academy, which helped accelerate his development.
The athlete of the week recipient is selected by a panel each Friday and announced Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Sports Guys on CBS Sports Radio 590AM and 96.7FM.
