Five-time champ Seavey named Alaska Athlete of the Week
Dallas Seavey was named Alaska Athlete of the Week after capturing his fifth championship in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
The Talkeetna musher now joins Rick Swenson as the race’s winningest musher. Seavey reached the Deshka Landing finish line at 5:08 a.m., completing the shortened race in 7 days, 14 hours, 8 minutes and 57 seconds.
He and his team finished just over 3 hours ahead of runner-up Aaron Burmeister. It was Seavey’s 5th Iditarod victory 12 attempts. His previous wins came in 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2012.
Racing legend and Alaska Sports Hall of Fame inductee Rick Swenson established 5-win status 30 years ago at age 40.
The athlete of the week recipient is selected by a panel each Friday and announced Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Sports Guys on CBS Sports Radio 590AM and 96.7FM.
