Twelve Years and Counting!
The Alaska Sports Blog provides comprehensive coverage on Alaska athletes doing great things at the professional, international and college level. The priority of the blog is to bring attention to athletes who are not otherwise getting recognition. Since 2009 former Anchorage Daily News Sports Editor and Alaska Press Club winner Van Williams has has been the driving force behind the blog, writing 5,000 stories on more than 1,500 Alaska athletes on this website. These blog stories are shared by the ASHOF Facebook and Twitter pages and are regularly picked up by local media, sometimes even national media like ESPN. The blog is also the place where the public can provide inductee recommendations or other comments regarding the Hall, Healthy Heroes or athletics in the community. Nobody knows Alaska sports better than Williams. A 30-year Alaska journalist, he is one of the state’s premier sports historians and in 2020 created a 64-man bracket to determine Alaska’s Greatest NCAA D1 Men’s Basketball Player. He also recently created a Friday Flashback series that looks back on Alaska’s greatest sports performances over the last 50 years.
Williams turned pro straight out of East High in 1990. He signed with the Monroe Journal newspaper in North Carolina, where he worked and attended Wingate College. He eventually returned to Alaska to work for the Anchorage Times and later the Anchorage Daily News, where he became Sports Editor before leaving in 2008 to become a freelance writer. Van is an Alaska Press Club Award recipient and has had his work run in numerous publications throughout Alaska and the United States. He is married to Marisa Cedeño. They have a Maltese named Duchess. Reach him at firstname.lastname@example.org
